Local MP warns over Unsolicited Council Tax Revaulation Offers

MP WARNS OVER UNSOLICITED COUNCIL TAX REVALUATION OFFERS

Local MP Caroline Spelman is warning constituents about unsolicited letters from companies offering to help change council tax banding for a fee.

She said: “I heard this week that some local residents have been receiving these letters. While such offers might not be illegal, it is worth pointing out that no one needs to pay to have their home reassessed. Companies charge a typical fee of 25 per cent plus VAT (totaling 30 per cent of any refund) but you can do this yourself by approaching the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) which will review the banding, although there is a chance that some properties that have been extended could be placed in a higher band. If, however, you feel that your property should be in a lower band you can contact the VOA on 03000 501501 or visit www.voa.gov.uk.”
