The first ‘Great British Tennis Weekend’ of the year will be taking place later in May, with further special weekends in June and July. There will be four such weekends in total this summer.
This is a national campaign run by the Lawn Tennis Association [LTA] to get more people playing tennis by encouraging venues to open their doors to the public and run free tennis events. The aim is to capitalise on increased interest in the sport around Wimbledon but also get people on court earlier in the year, and extend the playing season following the conclusion of the major events.
Caroline Spelman, MP for Meriden Constituency said: “This is a great initiative by the LTA and I’m delighted that many of our local tennis clubs are taking part in the ‘Great British Tennis Weekend’.
“Tennis Clubs opening their doors include Hampton in Arden Tennis Club and the Borough’s public amenity at Tudor Grange is also participating.
“I enjoy playing and watching tennis, but I’ve never been good enough to play competitively. Hopefully the ‘Great British Tennis Weekend’ will inspire our young people to get involved at an early age and develop a great hobby or even a career for the very best.”
